Antimicrobial and Disinfectant Testing

Biocides include disinfectants and antiseptics that are found in such products as surface disinfectants, hand washes, antimicrobial soaps, surface wipes, wall and floor coatings. In the 5D laboratories we determine the efficacy of antimicrobials using a vast array of different standard and customised tests and assays. Antimicrobial testing supports infection control in healthcare settings and also in the community. Antimicrobial testing methods ascertain the activity of antimicrobial agents under specified conditions.

Examples of some standards we routinely employ for testing the efficacy of antimicrobial agents include carrier tests, suspension tests and in-use testing. Other tests include BS EN 1276 and BS EN 13704, which evaluate the bactericidal and sporicidal activity of chemical disinfectants. These test methods can be used for products within the food, industrial, domestic and institutional industries. Furthermore, to assist with product compliance to the Biocidal Products regulations EU) 528/2012 we also carry out BS EN1276, BS EN 1650, BS EN 13697, BS EN 13704, BS EN 1499 and BS EN 1500. All testing is carried out against standards or using customised methods requested by the customer. Testing can be carried out using the standard type strains or they can be adapted to include alternative organisms required to support individual product claims for different customers in different industries.

Standard Antimicrobial and Disinfectant Test Methods

Provided below is a list of the common tests that are performed on different products and materials. For full details regarding the efficacy testing of antimicrobials please consult BS EN 14885 Chemical disinfectants and antiseptics – Application of European Standards for chemical disinfectants and antiseptics.

BS EN 1276 - Chemical disinfectants and antiseptics. Quantitative suspension test for the evaluation of bactericidal activity of chemical disinfectants and antiseptics used in food, industrial, domestic and institutional areas. Test method and requirements (phase 2, step 1). This is a standard test method which is sets out the minimum requirements for the bactericidal activity of chemical disinfectant and antiseptic products. This test can only be tested on products at a concentration of 80% or less. This standard applies to products that are used in the food, industrial, domestic and institutional areas. This standard excludes products that are used on living tissue except hand hygiene.

BS EN 1650 - Chemical disinfectants and antiseptics. Quantitative suspension test for the evaluation of fungicidal or yeasticidal activity of chemical disinfectants and antiseptics used in food, industrial, domestic and institutional areas. Test method and requirements (phase 2, step 1).

Further Antimicrobial and Disinfectant Test Methods

BS EN 1656 - Chemical disinfectants and antiseptics. Quantitative suspension test for the evaluation of bactericidal activity of chemical disinfectants and antiseptics used in the veterinary area. Test method and requirements (phase 2, step 1). This is a standard test method which is sets out the minimum requirements for the bactericidal activity of chemical disinfectant and antiseptic products. This test can only be tested on products at a concentration of 80% or less. The method described is intended to determine the activity of commercial formulations or active substances under the conditions in which they are used.

BS EN 13704 - Chemical disinfectants and antiseptics, Quantitative non-porous surface test for the evaluation of bactericidal and/or fungicidal activity of chemical disinfectants used in food, industrial, domestic and institutional areas. Test method and requirements without mechanical action (phase 2, step 2).

BS EN 1499 - Chemical disinfectants and antiseptics. Hygienic handwash. Test method and requirements (phase 2/step 2).

BS EN 14476 - Chemical disinfectants and antiseptics. Quantitative suspension test for the evaluation of virucidal activity in the medical area. Test method and requirements (Phase 2/Step 1).
